The Great Lessons and Some Other Things: A Summer Introduction to Montessori for a Rising Sixth Grader

I am getting things together for our summer homeschool session that will start June 2. Doodle will be looking at the Five Great Lessons, an overview of world history, and a timeline of art through three-part cards. I am so excited about what he will be doing!

The Great Lessons

A Really Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson is going to be his spine text.

Lesson 1, The Coming of the Universe and Earth

Doodle will use How the World Began: Creation in Myths and Legends a 48 page book by Gilly Cameron-Cooper for The Coming of the Universe and Earth.

This poster will hang on the wall.

Doodle will visit this page from the website of Professor Arif Babul.at the University of Victoria. From here, I plan to print this image and attach it to the poster with a string.

Lesson 2, The Coming of Life

For The Coming of Life, Doodle will have the 48 page The Big Picture Book, this poster will be on the wall.

Doodle will also be creating his own timeline of life.

Lesson 3, The Coming of Man

At this point, Doodle will be adding From Then to Now: A Short History of the World by Christopher Moore to his spine, A Really Short History of Nearly Everything. He will also have this poster.

Lesson 4, The History of Writing

When we arrive at Lesson 4, Doodle read the 48 page Ox, House, Stick by Don Robb. He will also watch A Brief History of Writing, an amusing and, uhhm, patriotic amateur video.

Lesson 5, The History of Number/ Mathematics

The History of Counting by Denise Schmandt-Besserat, 48 pages, will cover Lesson 5. I haven't chosen a video, but plan to have him watch one from YouTube.

Some Other Things

Once he begins From Then to Now, he will be reading a quick overview of human history. I have printed and laminated some art history three-part cards from Teachers Pay Teachers and he will also be working with those.

I can't wait until June!
